The Rider:Iron Chick

Iron Chick bought this bike new back in 2006 as her entry into Triathlons. It retailed for about $1900. It has been a fantastic bike carrying her through multiple Sprints, Triathlons and now Half Ironmans. If you are not familiar with Trek bikes they are very well made and were the bikes that carried Lance Armstrong to all the wins during his reign as world champion at the Tour deFrance.

The Package…

The Bike has an aluminum frame with Bontrager Carbon Race XXX Lite TT forks and Bontrager Select Aero wheels. It is a little heavy (I know, I am a weight Winnie) by my standards but it is not noticeable when riding.  One difference I noticed over my Specialized Transition was that it rides a little rougher. You feel more of the bumps and vibrations. The quality of the fit and finish is second to none. Very impressive.

Drivin me crazy…

The drive train is made up of:

  • Shifters Shimano Dura-Ace, bar end control, 10 speed
  • Front Derailleur Shimano 105
  • Rear Derailleur Shimano 105
  • Crank Bontrager Race 53/39
  • Cassette Shimano 105 12-25, 10 speed

This group is entry level but works generally well. They shift smooth albeit a little slow. Fast shift under pressure fair.

Breaking the silence…

The breaks are Cane Creek 3 w/BL2000K levers. The work very well and stop the bike as need gripping the Bontrager wheels firmly. The cockpit is spacious and has plenty of room for adjustment. Of course, Iron Chick was custom fitted at Fit Werx in Peabody, Ma. The Race Lite Pro Tri seat was not that comfortable for my wife so she switched it out for a Terry Butterfly.

All in all a great value and a nice bike.
