Timber!!!

And so it Begins…
This past weekend Iron Chick participated in The Timberman Triathlon Festival which was named the #1 “Must-do Triathlon Adventure” by Triathlete Magazine. Swim in clear, blue Lake Winnipesaukee, bike and run along its shores, taking in the beautiful mountain backdrop in central New Hampshire.

But that’s just the race… there’s also the TimberFest at Gunstock with live music, sports & fitness expo, Champions of Triathlon dinner, and seminars for both the novice and seasoned triathlete. Those who like to tri hard and play hard, can kick back at the TimberParty Clambake & Lobsterfest, with fireworks and s’mores, after the race. It’s a full weekend for triathletes, by triathletes.

This is the second year my wife and friends have competed in the race. Although I did not make it last year, this year I did get to play support for Iron Chick. The Timberman race is located in the heart of New Hampshire in Gilford on Lake Winnipesaukee. This is a beautiful area with lots of rolling hills, tall trees and gorgeous lakes. I have never spent any time in this area so everything was new to me.

Friday we picked up the race numbers and walked around the Expo at Gunstock where we ran in to Saul Raisin. Saul was one of the most promising young cyclists in the U.S. and some would say the world until a crash during a preparation race for the Tour of Italy in 2006. The crash should have killed him, actually it almost did. Saul is one hell of an inspiration having fought to gain his life back after a grim prognosis that originally had him having severe brain damage and bed ridden for life. Just three short years later Saul is back riding bikes and racing in triathlons. We had a chance to talk with him and he signed a copy of his book “Tour de Life” for us. Absolutely incredible story. After the Expo we had a bite to eat and hit the Drive In Theater. Wow did that bring back memories!

Saturday morning Iron Chick, Wendi and Jose all went for a short run. Then we hooked up with the full group from New Jersey who are all hard core athletes and a blast to hang out with. We geared up for a bike ride. As all but me were all racing the next day, they elected to ride about 12 miles. I on the other hand, kept riding for about 25 miles. After meeting back up with the group again we headed to the race area for a swim. Ok so they basically did a sprint the day before the half Iron Man. God I am a slacker! That night we all had a great Italian dinner at Fratello’s Restaurant.

Race Day…
The weather was hardly cooperative during the last few days dumping buckets of rain. However, the sun shown brightly on race morning as I got up and went for another ride before heading over to catch the event. The racers had of course left at 0 dark thirty for pre 8:00am starts. The course is pretty tough but Iron Chick had a good day shaving about 28 minutes off last year’s time. Of course it helps to be in the company of greats like Andy Potts and Chrissie Wellington who both won their division. After cleaning up, we all had dinner together to celebrate another great race.

After all…
I sure had a great time. I met a lot of great people had a boat load of laughs and got to ride around a beautiful area. As we drove home Monday, it almost made me want to do a triathlon. Well I did say almost.
